We acquired this receiver in 1989, on sale. It has served faithfully for 35 years. Some of the more useful controls on this unit included: the up/down buttons, which stepped in increments of 10kHz or so; the BFO, which aided in listening to sideband transmissions; the Wide/Narrow switch in AM, which offered a balance between audio quality and selectivity; and the Bass and Treble controls (I prefer to DX with the bass at max, and the treble cut out). In service at the CTO, this DX-440 was used in the logging of approximately 300 stations in the AM band, plus a number of longwave, shortwave and FM services. The DX-440 covered 150-281 kHz (Longwave), 520-1620 kHz (Mediumwave), and 1.6-30 MHz (Shortwave), plus FM (88-108 MHz). Digital tuning yielded incremental control, and direct entry meant no more cranking the dial when changing bands. We finally retired this receiver only in 2018. It still works. This exhibit is currently being restored. |
